Travel Diary – South Florida

A few weeks ago my friend Cathy called and asked me if I wanted to go to the Florida Derby, uhm yes!!! C blogs about her love of dogs, horses, fashion and wine over at Dog Lady, Horse Crazy. We joke that we share a brain because we’re pretty much always thinking the same thing. And we both share a love of travel and spontaneous trips! So when she asked me if I was free to fly down to the sunshine state, I couldn’t resist!

We stayed at The Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood, FL. The resort was gorgeous, and our room had a stunning view of the bright white beaches and gorgeous teal waters of the Atlantic. Seriously the sound of the ocean and the sight of palm trees immediately put me in a stress free state of mind. The beach is definitely my happy place!

We spent most of our time lounging by the pool, but did head into South Beach Friday night for dinner at Il Mulino, and then drinks at The Setai. The classic Italian food at Il Mulino was delicious! South Beach is only about a 45 minute drive from Hollywood, which means you can still enjoy a night out in South Beach, but stay in a low-key area if that’s more your speed.

I’ve only ever experienced the Kentucky Derby, and honestly I didn’t even know other states had derbies. The Florida Derby is definitely a more laid back vibe, but I still wanted to find a fabulous dress to wear! Insert Rent the Runway because they’re my go-to for any special occasion. I’m guilty of never wanting to wear the same thing twice, and also wanting to try new trends and styles, but I just can’t justify or afford spending more than $100 on a dress unless it’s a very special occasion.

Per Cathy’s urging I decided to give Rent the Runway Unlimited a try. This is their subscription service where you pay a monthly fee and get 4 items on rotation. I highly recommend this for Derby or wedding season, when you have a lot of events in a short time frame! I also want to give a shout-out to their customer service team. I started my subscription about a week before our trip, and then I realized the shipment was going to be delivered on the day I left town, so I wouldn’t get my dresses in time. I called RTR and they suggested shipping the items directly to the hotel. Done & done! My dresses arrived at the hotel the day we got there, and my suitcase was a little less stuffed!

I’ll share more about my RTR subscription in an upcoming post, but as we head into spring and summer, I wanted to share the love!

To cap off an already amazing day at the track. Their horse, Audible, won the Florida Derby!! I even got to tag along into the Winner’s Circle after the race. That was definitely a once in a lifetime type experience for me, but hopefully not for Starlight Racing. Audible is headed to the Kentucky Derby next month, so fingers crossed for a repeat performance.
